Smarter decisions – supporting fair and effective group decision-making

Our new animation Smarter Decisions, created in collaboration with Professor Uta Frith DBE FBA FMedSci FRS and Professor Chris Frith FBA FMedSci FRS, revisits why unconscious bias matters, how group dynamics can influence the decision-making process, and the conscious steps we can take to make decisions that are smarter, fairer, and more balanced.

Groups can often make better decisions than individuals, and groups that bring together a wide range of perspectives and experiences have the potential to make the best decisions of all. But decision-making in groups isn’t always straightforward. Unconscious (or implicit) biases can subtly influence how we interpret information. And social dynamics, like hierarchy, conformity, or dominant voices, can affect how individuals participate, which may lead to less inclusive outcomes.

As an organisation that celebrates excellence in science, we are committed to supporting our panels and committees in making decisions that are fair, transparent, and grounded in evidence.

Smarter Decisions is a reminder of the impact of implicit bias on group behaviour, and highlights evidence-based guidance to help panels and committees reach decisions that are fair, considered, and reflective of the diverse expertise around the table.
