As the UK’s national academy of science, the Royal Society is committed to promoting excellence in science, supporting international collaboration and showing the importance of science to everyone. To support these aims, we partner with various international schemes in order to make our journal content freely available to low-income and lower middle-income countries. If your country isn’t included on the list you will still be able to access any free journal content, including any content which is Open Access.

Open access APC waiver
For two of our journals, Open Biology and Royal Society Open Science, publication costs are covered solely by APCs. Such charges are only payable by authors if an article is accepted for publication (there is no charge for submission) and publication decisions are based solely on editorial criteria.
Corresponding authors based in low-income countries (classified as Group A or Group B by Research4Life) are eligible for a full waiver and should apply during the article submission process. Authors outside these countries have the opportunity to apply for an APC waiver, or a discount through a discretionary waiver, or their institution’s open access membership, as outlined below.
