SUSTAIN

A innovative programme of training and support designed to develop female researchers' leadership and career potential to thrive in their independent research careers. SUSTAIN is supported by the Academy of Medical Sciences, the Medical Research Council, the Royal Society and the Royal Society of Engineering. 

Applications are submitted online via the Academy of Medical Sciences electronic Grants and Awards management system. Further details of the programme including eligibility, timings and previous SUSTAIN participants' experiences be found on the Academy of Medical Sciences' SUSTAIN page.

Applications are open from Thursday 22 February until Monday 18 March 2024 at 4pm BST.

Why was it set up?

Not enough female researchers in science are securing senior leadership posts in the UK. A concerted effort is needed to ensure women are appropriately supported along their career trajectory to enable them to secure those senior positions. SUSTAIN is a unique programme in the UK offering female scientists and engineers from all disciplines with the opportunity to benefit from individualised support tailored to their career needs. 

What does it involve?

SUSTAIN is a year-long programme of interactive skills training and career development sessions, tailored mentoring and networking opportunities. Participants will be part of a unique cohort and engage with activities such as:

  • Career development workshops: tailored on issues such a media skills, strategic publishing, work-life balance and leadership styles
  • Peer support network: participants share learnings with their cohort offering peer support and safe discussion of issues and challenges they might be facing
  • One-to-one mentoring: participants are mentored by a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences 
  • Inspiring Women launch evening
