Celebrating 30 years of popular science writing

History of the Prize

The best books have the power to inspire, move or even change a life, and for 30 years the Royal Society Science Book Prize has been championing the best in popular science writing.

We believe the Prize is pivotal in promoting a wider understanding of science and its role in society, and all of our winning and shortlisted authors and books tell a story about the important scientific thinking of the time.

To commemorate our legacy and celebrate the future of this genre of literature, we have hosted special events throughout 2017. Below you find videos and material created in celebration of the book prize's 30th anniversary.
