About the course
This course is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills to embed public engagement into your work. Designed with early to mid-career scientists in mind, the course covers the benefits of public engagement, what ‘good’ looks like and understanding audiences, as well as how to create public engagement activities that grow out of, and complement, your research.
The course will be delivered in an interactive and participatory style by Dr Steve Cross, combining discussion, reflection and activity-based approaches. The entire programme will be full of case studies and anecdotes from Steve's 15 years in public engagement, focusing on his experiences with researchers whose experience directly relates to those on the course.
Who is it for?
This course is open to Royal Society-funded researchers and British Academy, Royal Academy of Engineering or Academy of Medical Sciences-funded researchers.
What will you learn?
After this course you will know how to:
- structure your ideas around two-way dialogues so that they lead to effective projects
- think about and segment audiences to target your projects well assess impact,
- and think about "designing-in" impact from the start access the support and finance you need
Who is the tutor?
Dr Steve Cross is a freelance public engagement consultant, Wellcome Trust Engagement Fellow and former Head of Public Engagement at University College London. Steve has over 10 years’ experience in public engagement and specialises in supporting researchers to engage with diverse communities.

How much does it cost?
The course fee is covered for Royal Society-funded researchers and British Academy, Royal Academy of Engineering or Academy of Medical Sciences-funded researchers.
