Request for information: Ethical engagement training for Royal Society Research Fellows

The Royal Society is seeking to gather insights on how organisations propose delivery of training in ethical engagement to help shape the scope and requirements of a future Royal Society training programme for funded researchers, which will precede a full tender process.

Please see below for more information as well as details on how to request the full brief.

Background

The Royal Society is a registered charity, the national academy for science in the UK and a self-governing Fellowship of many of the world’s most distinguished scientists drawn from all areas of science, engineering, and medicine. The Society’s fundamental purpose, as it has been since its foundation in 1660, is to recognise, promote, and support excellence in science and to encourage the development and use of science for the benefit of humanity.

As part of its strategic priorities the Society is committed to developing excellence in science through its funding programmes including its Early Career Fellowship schemes that support over 600 talented individuals with the potential to be future leaders in science.

The Royal Society has long provided public engagement and communication training to our funded researchers, ranging from introduction and storytelling to evaluation and promoting yourself. This strand of work relates to Aim 1 of the public engagement strategy to be a leader and advocate for public engagement in research by building capacity for scientists to undertake this activity.

About the request

Ethical engagement is increasingly recognised as a vital part of effective public engagement, encompassing responsible practice, equality, diversity and inclusion, and sustainable partnerships with communities. Following a review of our current training offering and consultation with public engagement teams across the UK, the Society seeks to commission the development and delivery of a one-day, in-person training course on ethical engagement (exact topic and title to be confirmed) to equip researchers with the knowledge and skills to undertake ethical engagement.
