Ocean Policy Primer
The Ocean Policy Primer was designed specifically for early career researchers (ECRs) in marine science and early career ocean professionals (ECOPs). Run in partnership with King’s Policy Institute, the course included plenary sessions and interactive workshops, with time for networking to build connections between scientists and policymakers.
Talks were given by Professor Jonathan Grant (Director, Different Angles Ltd), Mike Rowe (Director for Marine & Fisheries, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs), Dr Elin McCormack (Royal Society Research Fellow, Science and Technology Facilities Council), Katie Thorpe (Head of Learning and Development, Institute for Government) and Jane Rumble (Head of Polar Regions Department, Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office).

“I thoroughly enjoyed this course and feel it gave me an insight into each of the components involved in policymaking. The in-person workshop was the highlight of the course for me. The workshop activities we took part in were challenging but incredibly useful for distilling our research into key messages which can be communicated to policymakers - this isn't something I've been taught how to do anywhere else.
I will definitely be applying to any further courses from the Royal Society, which build upon the policymaking skills and knowledge I've developed through this course.
I would very much recommend this course to anyone looking to gain insight into how governmental policymaking works and how their research could fit into this landscape.”
