Collaboration plays a major part in science and technology, particularly international collaboration. This report is concerned with the means by which collaborations are initiated, concentrating on the role of the research conference. The report explores the extent to which the formation of collaborations is an objective of conferences, the nature and impact of those that are formed and the effectiveness of conferences compared to other routes to initiating collaboration. The study was conducted under the ESRC Research Programme on the European Context of UK Science Policy.
