Third update on BSE summarising current scientific knowledge and understanding of the causes and the present state of the outbreaks of BSE and nvCJD. It draws attention to the need to deal with transmissible spongiform encepholopathies (TSEs) in sheep and concludes that eventually all TSEs should be eliminated from farm animals. It identifies several lines of research which should be pursued in the future.
