CCS is recommended as part of a package of possible approaches to prevent carbon dioxide reaching the atmosphere. The capture of carbon dioxide from large stationary sources is technically feasible but expensive. We recommend that the use of an appropriate economic instrument could help to make CCS economically viable. Research is required on geological characterisation of potential storage sites but it needs to be coordinated with international partners in order to contribute to a global program of emissions reduction. The role of public opinion in the development of CCS technology was also highlighted as an important aspect for consideration.
