The Royal Society has responded to Research Councils UK (RCUK)’s consultation on the implementation of their Open Access policy, which came into effect in April 2013. The policy applies to the publication of peer‐reviewed research articles that acknowledge funding from the UK’s Research Councils. This consultation forms part of the first of a number of independent reviews that will monitor the implementation of the policy. The consultation focussed on the effectiveness and impact of the RCUK policy, compliance with the ‘green’ Open Access embargo periods mandated by the policy, the impact on particular discipline areas of the requirement for Creative Commons licensing, and how effectively the policy has been communicated.
