The Royal Society submitted evidence to the Commons Science and Technology Committee to highlight the dangers of no-deal Brexit for research and innovation, in addition to Professor Peter Bruce FRS, the Society's Vice-President and Physical Secretary, giving oral evidence on 30 January 2019,
The submission highlights two immediate actions that the government can take now to reduce the impact of a no-deal Brexit on science:
- Confirm that additional money will be made available to the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy in the event of no-deal Brexit, alongside the existing guarantees, to cover the costs of establishing alternative funding for UK researchers no longer able to access European Research Council, Marie-Sklodowska Curie Actions and the SME Instrument Programmes
- Take all opportunities to promote the UK’s commitment that it will always welcome global research and innovation talent
