The Royal Society has submitted evidence to Sir Adrian Smith's call for evidence on future frameworks for international collaboration on research and innovation.
This submission includes new data analysis showing the growing value of international collaboration to UK research and innovation generally and the particular value of working closely with European partners.
It sets out a number of principles that support internationally excellent collaboration:
- mobility (of people in and out of the UK)
- money (that can move across national borders within projects)
- common mechanisms (so that collaborations can embrace several countries at once)
It highlights that in the short-term seeking full association with the next EU Framework Programme – Horizon Europe – is by far the best option to maintain strong international collaborations in Europe and beyond and to instill confidence in our international partners.
