A letter to the Prime Minister from the President of the Royal Society, welcoming the government’s action to deliver net zero, and highlighting the role that science can play in delivering this.
Reducing carbon emissions and adapting to climate change will require research, development and deployment of low carbon technologies and nature-based solutions, while conserving biodiversity. Science can help to identify which technologies and natural solutions are ready for deployment, which require further development, and which require research. The letter calls for the UK to establish an evidence based, living and investible technology roadmap to net zero that sits outside short political cycles, draws on independent expertise and has long-term funding that can in turn leverage private sector investment.
