Academies challenge cuts to select committee

The Royal Society has joined forces with the Academy of Medical Sciences, the British Academy and the Royal Academy of Engineering to condemn proposals to slash the budget of the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee.

A joint letter has been sent to the Prime Minister which questions the wisdom of such cuts at a time when science is generally recognised as playing a vital role in the social, cultural and economic landscape of the UK.

The letter states that “Any reduction in the output of this committee would be a significant loss to Parliament’s capacity to understand and respond to advances in science and research for the benefit of the country”
