G7 national science academies call for action on digital technologies and cooperation on the Arctic

National science academies from the G7 countries, including the UK’s Royal Society, are jointly calling for member organisations to tackle two of the most pressing issues of our time ahead of the 44^th G7 Summit held in Charlevoix, Quebec, from 8-9 June 2018.

The global Arctic is being profoundly transformed by climate change, with implications on terrestrial and marine ecosystems, affecting those who live on and from them. At the same time, the promises and challenges of the digital revolution continue to expand and change, making the precise character of our digital future profoundly uncertain.

Venki Ramakrishnan, President of the Royal Society, says:

“The pronounced warming in the Arctic is alarming. We need the support and leadership of G7 countries to develop a shared scientific vision to protect this vital ecosystem as best we can.

“International cooperation will also be essential in developing our digital future. Urgent consideration needs to be given so that there is careful stewardship of these advancing technologies and that its dividends benefit all.”
