The Royal Society offers its congratulations to the winners of the Nobel Prize in Physics 2025, including Royal Society Fellow Professor John Clarke FRS.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has awarded this year’s prize to Professor John Clarke, Professor Michel H. Devoret, and Professor John M. Martinis “for the discovery of macroscopic quantum mechanical tunnelling and energy quantisation in an electric circuit”

Professor Sheila Rowan, Physical Secretary and Vice President of the Royal Society said, “I warmly welcome the news that Professor John Clarke, a Fellow of the Royal Society, has been jointly awarded the Nobel Prize alongside Professor Michel H. Devoret, and Professor John M. Martinis.

“Their experiments revealed that the strange laws of quantum physics apply not only at the atomic scale, but in systems big enough to see and touch. This discovery laid the foundation for the development of next-generation quantum technologies, including concepts for quantum computing.”

Professor John Clarke was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1986 for his work on the theory, design and applications of superconducting quantum interference devices. He was awarded the Royal Society Hughes Medal in 2004 for his outstanding research, leading the world in the invention, building and development of innovative new Superconducting QUantum Interference Devices (SQUID).
