Emerging infections: what have we learnt from SARS?

The world continues to suffer from new emerging infectious diseases, and the frequency of epidemic outbreaks is rising due to many reasons such as increased travel, growing populations and improved methods of detection. The outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) last winter is just one of the latest examples. With specific reference to the lessons learned from the recent SARS epidemic, this meeting will also address our general preparedness for future outbreaks of new, emergent infectious agents.
