Medical myths and misconceptions

02 July 2013 18:30 - 19:30

An interactive talk with Dr Suzy Lishman, as part of the 2013 Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition.

Event details

Can a cold land you in hot water?  Can you live without your liver?  Can you tell medical fact from fiction? We’ve all been told to eat our crusts, that an apple a day keeps the doctor away and that we’ll catch a cold if we go outside with wet hair. But how many of these are actually true? Join pathologist Dr Suzy Lishman to explore the science behind the health headlines and find out what really happens inside your body. This event will change your life – you’ll never look at a piece of chewing gum or a tennis ball in quite the same way again!

Dr Suzy Lishman is a consultant histopathologist at Peterborough City Hospital and Vice-President of the Royal College of Pathologists.  In her extensive public engagement work she has developed over 500 events as part of  National Pathology Week, including the popular 'virtual autopsy'.  In 2012 Dr Lishman was awarded the Royal Society Kohn Award for her excellence in engaging the public with the science of pathology.
