Breakfast reception – Business case for diversity in the scientific workforce
Breakfast reception from 8am, launch event from 8:30am, followed by networking
Conference Room, at The Royal Society, London
This event presents the results of research commissioned by the Royal Society, establishing the business case for diversity in the scientific workforce, as part of the BIS STEMM diversity programme ‘Leading the way: increasing diversity in the scientific workforce’.
The research, conducted by Westminster Business School, explored whether (1) there is a business case for diversity in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine (STEMM) occupations and (2) whether diverse teams are more likely to do ‘good science’. The report offers a unique STEMM specific perspective on the business case/s for diversity. The findings highlight the business benefits of diversity, which are often highly contextual, and the role that specific organisational cultural factors, leadership behaviours and managerial practices play in facilitating progress towards a more diverse workforce.
The event will be chaired by Professor John Burland CBE FRS (Emeritus Professor of Soil Mechanics at Imperial College London and Chair of the Royal Society Policy Study Working Group) and speakers include researchers from the Westminster Business School project team and speakers from industry.
The event will begin with a breakfast reception from 8am to 8:30am, with the launch event running from 8:30am to 9:30. The event will end with refreshments and an opportunity to network from 9:30am to 10am.
