Professor James Arthur CC FRS

James Arthur has made significant contributions to automorphic forms and representation theory. His primary contribution has been the formulation and development in a long series of papers of the trace formula in dimensions greater than one. This has been accompanied by related contributions to harmonic analysis on real reductive groups, character formulas and a Paley–Wiener theorem, and more recently by applications to number theory, especially to base change for automorphic forms on the general linear group.
