Anthony Leung is renowned for research into the soil-root hydro-mechanical interaction and applying the knowledge to develop environmentally and ecologically friendly engineering solutions for more sustainable built environment. Anthony’s cross-disciplinary research at the interface of unsaturated soil mechanics and plant biophysics has greatly improved our understanding of how complex root network reinforces soil and how plant water relations affects soil hydrology and hence soil stability.

Anthony pioneers various experimental and physical modelling techniques to investigate the complex soil-root interaction and the effectiveness of using plants to stabilise soil slope against nature hazards such as rainfall and earthquake, and also to reduce the impact force by debris flow.

Anthony’s research is globally recognised; he is an Excellent Young Scientist, a prestige award from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and also an awardee of Bright Spark Award from the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE).
