Professor Robin Franklin FMedSci FRS

Robin Franklin is a stem cell and regeneration biologist who is currently a Principal Investigator at Altos Labs Cambridge Institute having previously been Professor of Stem Cell Medicine at the Wellcome-MRC Cambridge Stem Cell Institute at the University of Cambridge.

Robin's laboratory works primarily on the regenerative biology of adult central nervous system progenitors, how they respond to injury and the mechanisms by which they give rise to new myelin-forming oligodendrocytes. His recent work has explored how CNS progenitor function changes with ageing and how this can be reversed, making discoveries of considerable translational importance for the chronic demyelinating disease, multiple sclerosis.

Robin obtained his undergraduate degrees in physiology and veterinary medicine from the University of London and his PhD from the University of Cambridge. He was Director of the UK MS Society Cambridge Centre for Myelin Repair between 2005 and 2020. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and was the recipient of the 2017 Barancik International Prize for Research Innovation and the 2021 King Faisal Prize for Medicine.
