Sally Price was in the first wave of women educated in a mixed Cambridge college and serving in a mixed fellowship, who had babies whilst a Royal Society University Research Fellow, and are on the academic staff at UCL Chemistry. Her PhD research with Professor Anthony Stone on modelling the intermolecular forces between diatomic molecules laid the foundation of her work, which advances in computer power now make relevant to the pharmaceutical and other organic materials industries.
As a theoretical/computational chemist, Sally develops the use of quantum mechanics to quantify the forces between molecules and their application in new codes to compute the structures and properties of organic solids. She led the Control and Prediction of the Organic Solid State project to understand how the computer generated crystal structures relate to the observed complex crystallisation behaviour of molecules, studying hundreds of compounds. This involves working with many pharmaceutical and computer scientists, chemical engineers, physicists, crystallographers and chemists, and led to her being awarded the 2015 Royal Society of Chemistry Interdisciplinary Prize.
