Dr. Sherif Beskhyroun is an Associate Professor and the former Programme Director of the Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Construction Engineering at the Department of Built Environment Engineering (BEE), Auckland University of Technology (AUT). With over 27 years of academic and professional experience across New Zealand, Canada, Japan, the Netherlands, and Egypt, Dr. Beskhyroun is a distinguished researcher, structural engineer, and academician.
Dr. Beskhyroun is globally recognised as an expert in Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) and damage detection in civil engineering structures. His expertise extends to the design of reinforced concrete structures and the development of sustainable cementitious materials. He has led several funded research projects as the principal investigator and contributed significantly as an associate investigator and team member in major projects funded by EQC, QuakeCoRE, and MBIE.
His international research collaborations span prestigious institutions such as The University of Auckland and GNS Science (New Zealand), Kitami Institute of Technology (Japan), The University of Saskatchewan (Canada), University of Aberdeen (UK), Universidad Católica de la Santísima Concepción (Chile), Sapienza University of Rome, and Politecnico di Milano (Italy). Dr. Beskhyroun has authored over 100 research articles in high-ranking journals and international conferences, making a significant impact on the practical application of SHM technology in large-scale civil engineering structures.

Notably, he played a key role in establishing the new Built Environment Engineering (BEE) Lab at AUT, specifying and acquiring essential equipment and capabilities.
Dr. Beskhyroun's teaching experience is extensive and diverse, spanning institutions in New Zealand, Canada, Japan, the Netherlands, and Egypt. Since joining AUT in 2015, he has contributed significantly to developing the Bachelor of Engineering Honours BE (Hons) programs in Construction Engineering and Architectural Engineering. In recognition of his excellence in teaching and learning support, he was awarded Fellowship of The Higher Education Academy (FHEA) in 2019 and received the Faculty of Design and Creative Technologies (DCT) Champions Award in 2020.
