Stuart Rowan's research is at the interface of supramolecular chemistry and polymer science and focuses on the development of new stimuli-responsive, adaptive, and functional materials. His work brings together organic chemistry, polymer synthesis, thermomechanical studies of polymers, sustainable materials, and biomedical materials. He has made key contributions in the areas of supramolecular and dynamic covalent polymers, biomimetic materials, and the synthesis of new interlocked polymers.
Rowan obtained his undergraduate and PhD at the University of Glasgow. He did postdoctoral research at the University of Cambridge and UCLA before starting his independent career at Case Western Reserve University in 1999. In 2016 he moved to the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering and Department of Chemistry at the University of Chicago with an appointment at Argonne National Laboratory. He has been the Editor-in-Chief of ACS Macro Letters since 2018 and has been elected as a Fellow of the American Chemical Society and the Royal Society of Chemistry.
