Dr Paz (Upasana) Tayal is a Cardiologist and Academic Clinical Lecturer at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London and the Royal Brompton Hospital London.

She has expertise in inherited cardiac conditions and cardiac imaging. Her current research focus is to understand sex specific differences in patients with cardiomyopathy, with the aim of improving outcomes for all patients affected by these conditions.

She graduated from the University of Oxford with Merit. In 2014 she was awarded an MRC Clinical Research Training Fellowship to evaluate the integrated genetic and phenotypic assessment of dilated cardiomyopathy. This work was awarded the National Heart Lung Institute Best Thesis Prize in 2018. She undertook a post-doctoral fellowship at Stanford University. Her work has been published in several high impact journals including JACC and Circulation and cited in policy documents. She has been awarded the American College of Cardiology Young Investigator award twice (2017 and 2021). In 2021 she was shortlisted for the prestigious L'Oreal UNESCO Women in Science award. She co-leads an international cardiomyopathy consortium and the impact of her work has been recognised with a top 20 ranking in dilated cardiomyopathy amongst 18,000 clinicians on Expertscape.

She also serves on the British Cardiovascular Society Clinical Standards Committee and the Royal Society of Medicine Cardiology Council. She was Past President of the Trainees Section of the Royal Society of Medicine.

She is a proud mother of 3 young children and is committed to creating a more inclusive scientific community.
