Akshay Venkatesh grew up in Perth and went to the University of Western Australia, where he studied mathematics and physics. He moved to the US in 1998 for his PhD in pure mathematics, which he completed in 2002. The topic of his thesis was number theory, a very old field of pure mathematics which still seems to have many surprises, and which he have continued to work in until the present day. After doing a postdoc at MIT, he was a faculty member at NYU and then at Stanford University from 2008-2017. Since 2017, he has been a professor at the Institute for Advanced Study, a research institute in Princeton, New Jersey.
