Professor Bernard P. Binks FRS

Bernie Binks obtained his BSc and PhD degrees in Chemistry from the University of Hull. After a postdoctoral stay at the ENS Paris he became lecturer in Chemistry at the University of Hull becoming Professor in 2002 and led the Surfactant & Colloid Group for 15 years. He is currently Emeritus Professor of Physical Chemistry and enjoys consulting and numerous international collaborations.

After early work on surfactant microemulsions, he began investigating the behaviour of solid colloidal particles as surfactant substitutes at fluid interfaces. His pioneering work includes particle-stabilised emulsions and aqueous and oil foams. He also developed novel materials using controlled assembly of particles at a variety of interfaces including dry water, powdered oil and liquid marbles. Currently catalysis in Pickering emulsions is being actively pursued.

He is the author of > 400 papers and has edited 3 research monographs. Recent awards include: 2022 Sir Eric Rideal Award (RSC/SCI), 2023 Overbeek Gold Medal (European Colloid and Interface Society), 2024 Lectureship Award (Chemical Society of Japan) and 2025 Journal of Colloid and Interface Science-Darsh Wasan Award (Elsevier).
