A synthesis of fossil occurrences of extant species will offer a bridge in understanding microevolution and macroevolution, allowing more accurate reconstruction of the evolutionary history of organisms. However, the fossils of most organisms have been sparsely collected or poorly studied, and so provide limited information in understanding the evolutionary history of the whole group. In addition, several organisms have small extant populations, which limits the information available from molecular data. The diversity of both fossils and extant species, a cosmopolitan distribution, as well as high diversity in behaviour, physiology and ecological characteristics, rank the mammals as ideal taxa for these kind of integrative studies. My recent study aims to:
(1). review the fossil occurrences of different mammals, as well as to infer the historical biogeography of different eco-type groups based on fossils and molecular data from extant species. Based on theses analyses, we aim to identify the main ecological factors affecting the evolutionary dynamics of different groups and to infer or deduce any possible concordance between global environmental change and the evolutionary history of these animals.
(2). study the ontogeny, evolution and morphological integration of these animals and to identify the phylogenetic and ecological concordance of their form changes.
(3). compare the phylogeographic structure in the representative species of different eco-type groups, and to trace back the historical global environmental change which induced population expansion or contraction, gene flow, and transformation of distribution patterns in these animals.
