Professor Dudley Spalding FREng FRS

Dudley Spalding was well known for his many important theoretical and experimental contributions to the engineering sciences of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and combustion, heat and mass transfer, and combustion. To take two examples only, his pioneering work on the general theory of heat and mass transfer with chemical reactions has been widely used in engineering applications, and his unified theory of turbulent boundary layers has enabled a wide range of phenomena, such as separation and the influence of mass transfer, to be treated theoretically. His other work concentrated on the numerical solution of a wide range of problems in fluid mechanics. He was internationally known for his fundamental research in many areas within his field and his innovations are widely used at home and abroad.
