Kathy Whaler is a geophysicist interested in planetary magnetic fields and electromagnetic induction. She has sought to estimate the flow of liquid iron at the top of the core that explains the temporally-varying geomagnetic field, and to map magnetization distributions in the crust of Earth, Moon and Mars. Her induction studies have focussed on rifting in Africa. She obtained a BSc in Mathematical-Physics from the University of Sussex in 1977, and a PhD from the University of Cambridge in 1981. After a short spell as a Research Fellow, she became a lecturer in Earth Sciences at the University of Leeds and, in 1994, moved to the established Chair of Geophysics at the University of Edinburgh. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (1997) and the American Geophysical Union (2005), and received the Price Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society (2013). She was Head of Department of Geology and Geophysics (1999-2002) and is currently Deputy Head of School of GeoSciences.
