Professor Edwin Hancock FREng

Biography

Edwin Hancock (FREng) works on machine learning and pattern recognition in the graph domain and physics-based vision. He has used these techniques to develop new algorithms in the fields of computer vision, complex networks, and quantum computing. He has worked extensively on the use of graph-spectral, random walk, and Bayes IMG_0813 to develop the underlying methodology for these new algorithms. His work has found applications in computational finance, medical imaging and statistics, remote sensing, and computer graphics. e currently holds a Leverhulme Trust Award to use structure-from-motion techniques to estimate glacier mass loss using archival photographs sourced from the Scott Polar Research Institute.

He is an Emeritus Professor at the University of York and holds honorary or visiting positions at Anhui University, Beihang University, Shanghai University, Renmin University, and Xiamen University. He is Editor in Chief of the journal Pattern Recognition a member of the REF panel in Computer Science and Informatics and has Chaired Research Evaluation Committees in Mathematics and Computer Science for the Czech Academy of Science. He is a  winner of the Pattern Recognition Society Medal, the IAPR Pierre Devijver Award, and holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Alicante. He held a Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award from 2009 until 2014.
