Professor Eiichi Nakamura ForMemRS

Eiichi Nakamura is University Professor at the University of Tokyo and Lecture Professor at Nankai University. After postdoctoral work at Columbia University, he joined Tokyo Institute of Technology and was promoted to full professor before moving to the University of Tokyo. He served as a member of the Science Council of Japan and as Program Officer and Director at JSPS and JST.

An organic chemist, Eiichi has advanced the interface of chemistry, materials, and nanoscience. His work with iron and copper has led to novel synthetic methods and deeper insight into catalysis. He has also developed pi-conjugated nanomaterials for sustainable energy and pioneered single-molecule atomic-resolution time-resolved electron microscopy (SMART-EM) for studying molecular dynamics—realizing a vision dating back to Boltzmann.

Eiichi is an International Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and has received honors such as the Order of the Sacred Treasure and the Medal with Purple Ribbon from His Majesty the Emperor of Japan, the Japan Chemical Society Award, the Centenary Prize from the Royal Society of Chemistry, and the A.C. Cope Scholar Award from the ACS.
