Eric Mansfield imaginatively and comprehensively extended mathematical elasticity theory to give results of practical importance in the analysis of modern aircraft structures. Notably, Eric achieved this through his work on static and dynamic plate theory, which he extended to include the effect of stiffening ribs, cut-outs, diffusion of concentrated load into sheets, large deflexions, buckling and post-buckling (taking plasticity into account), and interactions with thermal stress effects. He summarised contemporary knowledge in this vast field with his book, The Bending and Stretching of Plates, now a classic of its subject.
Dr Eric Mansfield FREng FRS died on 20 October 2016.
