Dr Janet Metcalfe is the Chair and Head of Vitae, a world-leading programme supporting researchers’ professional development and their careers. Vitae works with governments, research funders, universities and researchers to develop excellent researchers capable of producing world-class research and highly skilled employees for the benefit of the economy and society.
With a background in organic chemistry she has worked in a variety of occupations and employment sectors, including marketing and supply chain management in both the chemicals industry and in consumer goods. As an independent training and development consultant she now works in partnership with CRAC, to implement the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers, including an equality and diversity initiative ‘Every Researcher Counts’.
She led the development of the Vitae Researcher Development Framework which describes the knowledge, skills and attributes of highly effective researchers and is now used by researchers in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe and North America. Her latest research is on the career paths of postdoctoral researchers who leave European research organisations to work in other employment sectors.
