Joanna Chamberlain is Director of Sustainability at the University of Exeter where she provides strategic direction to the University and is responsible for developing and implementing long-term plans to meet its ambitious carbon commitments and improve its sustainability.


Joanna joined the University of Exeter in October 2022 from the University of Cambridge where she held the role of Head of Sustainability for ten years. Prior to joining the University of Cambridge, she was Senior Policy Adviser for Sustainable Development at the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), leading the development and implementation of HEFCE's sustainable development strategy and carbon reduction strategy for higher education in England.

 

Joanna is a Chartered Environmentalist, a Fellow of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment and a Fellow of the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC). In 2022, she was also named on the inaugural ENDS Report Power List as one of the 100 UK environmental professionals who have made the greatest impact in the past two years.


Joanna was educated at the Universities of Nottingham and Southampton. She has previously served six years as Charity Trustee and Company Director for Bristol Children's Scrapstore and three years on the Executive of the EAUC.
