Joanne's Doctoral research at Oxford University focused on zoonotic disease within the UK, including the impact of parasites on host behaviour. After a year as an NHS Clinical Scientist, Joanne returned to Oxford as a JRF, Lecturer in Infectious Diseases and Royal Society University Research Fellow. Joanne then accepted a Professorship at Imperial College's Faculty of Medicine and served as co-Director of the Schistosomiasis Control Initiative from its inauguration, providing anthelminthic treatments for children across sub-Saharan Africa. In 2014, Joanne joined the Royal Veterinary College to expand her global One Health research.
Joanne’s research and disease control activities have been awarded a number of medals, such as the CA Wright Medal for 'Outstanding contribution to Parasitology', the Queen's Anniversary Medal for 'Contributions to the health of children in Africa' (as part of SCI), the Chalmers Memorial Medal for 'Outstanding contribution to Tropical Medicine', and most recently the Royal Society Leeuwenhoek Medal and Lecture for 'Achievements in advancing the control of disease in humans and animals in Asia and Africa'. Joanne was made a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2022.
