Biography

José Sarukhán is a plant biologist and pioneering contributor to the field of systems ecology. A specialist in the study of both temperate and tropical ecosystems, he has conducted extensive research on biodiversity in his native Mexico.

In recent years, José has embarked on important collaborations with the Mexican government to ensure the preservation of the country’s natural resources. By implementing innovative geographical data mining techniques, he hopes to improve the collection and interpretation of data necessary for long-term conservation.

As a leading figure in Mexican science, José has served as President of the National University of Mexico as well as the Mexican Academy of Sciences. He has been elected as a member of professional societies around the world and has served as a scientific adviser to many national and international committees on environmental issues.
