Research summary

Life on Earth relies on photosynthesis to form sugars at the base of any food chain. Under optimal conditions, major crops maximum yield is set by the rate of photosynthesis. After 50 years of Green Revolution, the remarkable improvement in crop productivity has reached a plateau. Increase in food production to meet food and energy requirements of an expanding population relies on enhancing photosynthetic mechanisms to increase yields.

Therefore, my research is focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms that regulate photosynthesis in plants. Using rice as a model, regulators of photosynthesis and chloroplast development will be used to either increase photosynthesis or trigger this process in non-photosynthetic cells.
