We target porous MOF materials that are stable to SOx and NOx and incorporate IL sites to enhance sorption and binding of these substrates. Ionic liquids (ILs), composed of cationic moieties such as ammonium, pyridinium, phosphonium and imidazolium groups, show good solubility for both CO2 and SO2. Full analysis of gas uptake capacities, reversibility and isosteric heat of adsorption will be undertaken. In situ powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction and inelastic and quasi-elastic neutron scattering studies, together with DFT and grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations, will be undertaken on gas-loaded materials to establish the structure and dynamics of the binding of SOx and NOx in these hosts at a molecular level. The incorporation of successful materials into thin films will also be investigated in the context of manufacturing devices for SOx and NOx capture and separation.
