Dr Mallikarjun Tatipamula FREng FRSE FCAE FNAE FRS is CTO at Ericsson, Silicon Valley, whose 35-year career has significantly contributed to the evolution of global telecommunications from 2G to 5G and beyond. He has led four major architectural transitions: enabling mobile internet by integrating IP into mobile communication systems; scaling the internet backbone through IP-over-DWDM systems; pioneering software-defined 5G for Industry 4.0; and shaping the emerging global framework for 6G.
His seminal work includes quantifiable contributions to global telecom standards, practical innovations, and real-world implementations that accelerated the progression from 2G to 5G and laid the foundation for future 6G networks. These efforts have been central to building intelligent, secure, and connected digital infrastructure—helping bridge the digital divide.
In addition, Dr. Tatipamula has played a pivotal role in advancing collaboration across industry, academia, and government—aligning research, standards, policy, and funding roadmaps. He has also been a key driver of international cooperation, fostering global alignment on telecom innovation, standards, and 6G policy. He is a strong advocate for workforce development and digital inclusion. He has been elected to five national academies and awarded three honorary doctorates, alongside multiple international honours.
