Stanley Whittingham is a SUNY Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Materials Science & Engineering at Binghamton University, and Director of the NorthEast Center for Chemical Energy Storage. His research interests embrace materials chemistry and electrochemistry, with a particular emphasis on energy storage and lithium batteries. He pioneered the use of soft chemistry approaches for the formation of new often metastable materials that are electrochemically active.
Stan's research has been recognised with a number of prestigious awards and fellowships. He received the 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his pioneering work on lithium intercalation batteries, he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2018, Foreign Member, Royal Spanish Academy of Sciences in 2021, the Turnbull Lecture award of the Materials Research Society in 2018, Honorary Member, Battery Research Award and Young Author Award of the Electrochemical Society, GreentechMedia top 40 innovators for contributions to advancing green technology in 2010, and JSPS Fellow at Tokyo University in 1993. He is a Fellow of the Electrochemical Society, the Materials Research Society, International Society of Electrochemistry and ICDD.
