Professor Mohamed Hassan, President of Sudanese National Academy of Sciences (SNAS), earned his DPhil in Mathematics from Oxford University in 1973. He joined Khartoum University and became Professor and Dean of Mathematical Sciences. In 1986, he moved to Trieste to help organise TWAS's inaugural meeting and served as its founding Executive Director for nearly 25 years.
Hassan has significantly contributed to the establishment and development of TWAS; Organisation for Women in Science (OWSD); African Academy of Sciences (AAS) and Network of African Academies (NASAC). He served as President of TWAS, AAS, and NASAC; Co-Chair of IAP Chair of UN University Council and of Governing Council of UN Technology Bank for LDCs.
Beyond numerous publications on mathematical models of plasma transport in nuclear fusion experiments and desert sand dynamics, he has also published several articles on science in the global south and international collaboration. His honours include Officer of Order of Merit of Italy ; Class of Grand Cross in National Order of Scientific Merit of Brazil; G77 Leadership Award and Abdus Salam Medal for Science and Technology. He is member of Pontifical Academy of Sciences, Hassan II Academy of Science and Technology, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and Academy of Sciences of South Africa
