Summary: I investigate granular materials with a special interest in geophysical phenomena occurring in nature (dunes, avalanches) and engineering problems in industry (sound propagation, collective behavior). Recently, I have been fascinated by granular segregation: the physics is poorly understood, but behavior of particulate matter is significantly impacted. My Fellowship involves a multidisciplinary program to obtain a fundamental understanding of segregation through experiments and modelling. Next month I am off to Qatar to do more field experiments on the structure and migration of barchan sand dunes, using ground penetrating radar and local sand sampling.
