Professor Neil Hunter FRS

Dr Neil Hunter studies reproductive biology, focusing on how eggs and sperm receive the correct number of chromosomes. He has made major discoveries in understanding how matching chromosomes exchange DNA and become connected through a process called crossing over. Crossovers are essential for accurately distributing chromosomes and for creating genetic diversity in offspring.

Dr Hunter received his BSc degree from the University of Manchester, his PhD from the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine in Oxford, and postdoctoral training from Harvard University. He is currently an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Professor in the Department of Microbiology & Molecular Genetics at the University of California Davis. He was elected as a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
