Biography

Peter Cawley is a mechanical engineer who specialises in nondestructive testing (NDT) and analysis. Peter’s research has made a major impact on multiple industries where the need to evaluate the properties of materials, components and systems without causing damage is essential for efficient and effective operations.

He specialises in sonic and ultrasonic techniques, transmitting electromagnetic waves into materials to detect internal flaws or to characterise materials. Expert at translating these techniques into practical applications, Peter is also Director of two spin-out companies set up to exploit his research, one of which develops instrumentation for testing metal pipework. The other develops instruments for continuous corrosion monitoring, providing real-time computerised measurement of pipe-wall thickness in inaccessible environments. His work has helped to improve operations in the oil and gas industry and other power-generation applications.
