Summary: Metro maps, such as the well known map of the London Underground, are used to help guide travellers in cities around the world. Similar maps can often be seen for overground train and bus networks. All these maps are currently drawn by expert graphic designers, and can take many days to produce. Recently, attempts at automatic layout of metro maps have been made. The goal of this work is not to replace the metro map designer, as a computer generated map will never have the subtle balancing of qualities that are present in a human designed map, rather, it is to broaden the use of such schematic diagrams.
