Peter Thomas began his teaching career in 1980 and has taught GCE Mathematics at Hills Road Sixth Form College, Cambridge, since 1986. He served on ACME from 2006 to 2009 and is a member of its Outer Circle. He is also Honorary Secretary of the Joint Mathematical Council of the United Kingdom and Vice Chair of the Schools and FE Group of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications. He has fulfilled several roles in The Mathematical Association, including membership of its Council and being Secretary of its Teaching Committee and Chair of its Post-16 Subcommittee; at present he is a member of the MA’s Policy Advisory Group. As Chair of the National Committee for Mathematical Contests he was involved in the establishment of the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust in 1996. Peter has worked as an examiner, including being a Principal Examiner for two GCE specifications, and he has a long-standing involvement in a university admissions test. He has served on several advisory bodies for QCA and subsequently QCDA as well as for other organisations. Among the initiatives with which he has been involved are the development of the Advanced Extension Award, the 2004 reforms to GCE mathematics and the Mathematics Pathways Project. He has been involved in efforts to promote and sustain GCE Further Mathematics since the late 1980s, including the development of the first AS Further Mathematics syllabus.
