Research summary

I choose the above two research areas because they represent seemingly distantly related works but for which there are strong connections to present day societal issues. The research shows examples of cultural and biological evolution of our species in the past both of which have used simple lipid biomarker proxies to reconstruct past events. In Prehistoric China we show how climate change drove demographic change, which likely precipitated cultural changes. In Neolithic Europe we demonstrate technological changes in food processing in response to agricultural and dietary changes. Both examples have potential parallels with changes that will likely be seen in the years ahead in the face of global climate and dietary changes.
